FAQ

  • A4 Portrait Canvas (2480 x 3508 px) @ 300 DPI
  • Artists have the option to do 1 or 2 pieces
  • Submit a HQ PNG with no watermark (you may add your watermark when you post your own piece!)

We are looking to accept a max of 40 artists. You do not need prior zine experience or a large following to apply to our zine! Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to apply.

We’re looking for pieces inspired by traditional fantasy or fairy tales! Think concepts like dragons, magic/mages/witches, royalty/knights, fairies, mermaids, vampires, etc. Or fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, The Little Mermaid, Goldilocks, etc. This zine will not include other types of fantasy like sci-fi, paranormal, cyberpunk, etc. Darker/horror themes are OK as long as they are SFW (PG-13).

Unfortunately, we will not be allowing romantic shipping within the zine. To avoid unwanted and unnecessary discourse, we ask participants to refrain from including ships in their art. The exceptions to this rule are established songs that depict specific pairings (ex: Cendrillon with Miku and Kaito). If you’re not 100% certain if your idea fits, ask the mods!

At this time, no. We will only be accepting apps for page artists. We appreciate your interest in our zine! Future iterations of the zine may include more than just page art, so please follow our socials for updates!

We will send acceptance/rejection notices through email from our official email: onceuponasynthzine@gmail.com. Accepted artists will be invited to join a dedicated Discord server where zine updates will be sent. We’ll ask artists to send check ins through Discord and their final artwork through a Google Form that will be provided in the server. There will also be dedicated channels to share wips with the other participants!

Yes, you do! All we ask is that participants try to keep the cast of characters featured in the zine as a whole varied! While we all love Miku and friends, we’d love to feature lesser known/less popular characters!

Yes! You may draw as many characters as you’d like. Artists will be given the choice to do up to 2 pieces for the zine.

Yes, absolutely!

No, the characters you depict do not have to be strictly humans! There are lots of races/species in fantasy worlds. You can depict them as animals (anthropomorphic or not), orcs, goblins, elves, vampires, dragons, mermaids, you name it!

Yes! For example, the Wonderland series of Hatsune Miku figures (which depict Miku as different fairy tale characters) can absolutely be used. You can even choose to redraw the figure exactly! This goes for any other pre-existing Vocal Synth design that fits the fantasy theme.

If it fits the theme, yes! Songs like Death Should Not Have Taken Thee, anything from the Evillious Chronicles series, etc. are all welcome to be included.

Yes! If you wanna draw Miku and Teto fighting a dragon in Skyrim, by all means, please do! Just be sure to keep the focus on the Vocal Synths themselves, rather than the media you are taking inspiration from. This is a Vocal Synth zine after all!

Yes, to an extent. We will allow a max of 2 artists per repeated fairy tale/song. This will be decided on a first come, first served basis.
